How to Choose the Right Microphone for Voice-Overs

While choosing a microphone, make sure that whatever you decide to purchase will do justice to your voice. It must bring your talent to the fore. If the price of the microphone is high, it doesn't mean that it is right for you. Having said that, with so many options available in the market choosing the right microphone for voice-overs can be an overwhelming task if you don't know much about it. 

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the steps that you should consider before purchasing the microphone for voice-overs. 

 

Step 1. Connection Type (USB vs. XLR)

 

First and foremost, you need to decide on the connectivity type. Both USB and XLR can help you record high-quality voice-overs. However, USB is more of a compact option that is better suited for entry-level voice-over artists. On the flip side, XLR is more professional and versatile and more complex in terms of use. 

USB is easier to learn and affordable. XLR on the other hand requires additional gear such as XLR cable and an audio interface. These are more expensive as compared to USB. 

Step 2. Microphone Type

Dynamic and Condenser are two different microphone types from which you can choose. Both of these perform the same job, however, in a different way. In case if you don't know, both of these are used for transducing sound into electrical impulses. Having said that, the mic in your smartphone is dynamic. These are used in various applications including voice-overs. 

On the flip side, Condenser type is specifically designed for voice-overs and studio use. They have more sensitivity and better diaphragm. To achieve a rich and natural voice this is a better option. Therefore, if you are recording podcasts, audiobooks, or voice-overs - Condenser type microphone is more suited.

Omnidirectional can record sound and voices from all directions. No matter where the sound comes from, it will record it. Therefore, it is not a good choice for voice-overs. Bi-directional, on the other hand, is suitable when having a dialogue with someone sitting on the other side. 

Step 4. Diaphragm Size

Each microphone comes with a diaphragm that is responsible for capturing sound waves. Having said that, voice-over artists tend to prefer a microphone with the larger diaphragm as they produce richer tones. Such a microphone helps in producing a warm and deep voice without the need for post-processing. 

On the flip side, microphones with smaller diaphragms pick up less room noise. It has lesser sensitivity as compared to a large diaphragm. These are better suited for live events, and presentations.
